About this site:

This site was first launched in 1999 to accompany my lectures on the History of Graphic Design.
I devised the format of presenting the information by topics because I saw that students were overwhelmed
by the scope of Megg's History of Graphic Design survey text. I also saw that they learned more when the
discussions included direct links to what is happening in design today.

I am always interested in hearing more about what students want from their design history classes and please
let me know if the site helps you, additions that you would make or any thoughts on the topic.

I am not a design historian, my degree is an MFA in Graphic Design from Cranbrook in 1978. I studied under
Katherine McCoy who inspired our interests in the roots of graphic design. I have worked for many years as a graphic
designer in New York City and am old enough to have a perspective on how things were precomputer, per internet
and pre-Meggs.
I even ordered metal type for my first projects. I have, however, taken many classes on the topic
of graphic design history and am indebted to many fine teachers including James Mosley,

Stanley Nelson, Albert Acres. Take their classes if you can.
